So I was awarded an Arts Council grant to explore some new things around my stained glass! I am absolutely chuffed to bits.
In my application, I said this ” Traditionally, stained glass has been closely tied to religious and heritage architecture, where it functions as part of a building’s fabric. However, changes in construction practices, particularly the widespread use of double glazing and energy-efficient building standards, have significantly reduced opportunities for stained glass to be integrated into contemporary architecture. As a result, the medium has increasingly become marginalised or reduced to small-scale decorative forms.
The creative idea behind this project is to reposition stained glass as a contemporary, spatial medium by developing alternative display systems that allow it to function independently of windows. Rather than treating stained glass as a building material, this research focuses on internally mounted, light-based display formats that can operate within modern interiors without compromising energy efficiency or architectural constraints.
Part of my grant conditions is to record my progress through trialing different ways of making wall mounted light displays, so this blog will be my ongoing record of the process.
